“STARING CONTEST” by GRIFFIN JONES

GROWING UP I HAD SEVEN SISTERS. EACH ONE OF THEM TAKES GREAT PAINS TO SHARPEN THE KNIVES AT THEIR THROATS. THEY ARE ALL DWARFED BY ME, THE BIGGEST KNIFE IN THE FOREST. THEY ALL LEAP UP WHEN I WALK BY AND TRY TO PRICK MY FINGERTIPS AND SIGN MY LIFE AWAY WITH THEIRS. MY FAVORITE MEMORY IS WHEN WE STOOD AROUND A CAMPFIRE AND SANG A SONG IN LAUGHS THAT NEVER ONCE ECHOED THOUGH WE ALL LISTENED FOR IT IN THE FOREST.

MIA TOLD ME I SEE THROUGH PEOPLE. BUT I KNOW I JUST LOVE PEOPLE’S MASKS, THAT I’VE NEVER SEEN A PERSON IN MY WHOLE LIFE! IT GOT TO BE WINTER ALL THE SUDDEN. HALLOWEEN WAS LAST NIGHT AND YOU KNOW WHAT WE DECIDED? IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN YOUR MASK YOU’RE FUCKED, NOBODY WILL HAVE FUN AT THE PARTY.

EVERY WEEK I AM A HUMPTY DUMPTY INDEED. A NURSERY RHYME ALIVE I SEEM, A SENTENCE OR TWO AND THE WEEK IS PAST, SOMETHING PUTS ME LITTLE EGGY ALL TOGETHER SO BROKE THE YOLK. OH YES I NEVER COULD FEEL COMFORTABLE SAYING LIFE GOES ON, IT DON’T IT DON’T, IT END ALL THE TIME WITH EVERY WINK AND BREATH, ONE LESS LEFT. HE THE LOVER PASS ON BY, SOMETHING ELSE IN HIS EYE. SUDDENLY THE RHYME BUG GOT ME SINCE LOVE DONE GONE ASUNDER. LOVE DONE GONE ASUNDER FOR MINE LITTLE MY. HUMPTY DUMPTY A LEGEND SINCE THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO HIM OVER AGAIN, ONLY THE ONE THING AND THAT ONE THING ONLY. THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENS EVERY TIME TO THE ME, THE EXACT SAME AH THING EVERY UH WEEK. THE GHOSTS OF OTHERS LOOM IN OUR LIVES. TO MINE MESS IMMUNE, CAR LITTERED WITH EMPTY COFFEES AND SOME OTHER CLICHES OF THE SADNESS. THE MORE AM LITTERED I THE MORE TOWARD THE NURSERY RHYME. GRIFFIN LIFFIN LOOKED AND SEE-ED, GRIFFIN LIFFIN TOOK HER LEAVE. NO WONDER IS IT FEELING WHOLE FEELS NEVER QUITE AS GOOD. HUMPTY DUMPTY JUMPED HE DID. MY GOD OF LIGHT, HE GONE, NOW NIGHT. SCATTERED ROUND SOME HOMES IS ME, CRACKED ACROSS ETERNITY.
